He smells like strong coffee and going to see a man about a horse – Nick | New Girl

I was watching old episodes of New Girl with my son last night (now don’t start in on my torturing him with my chic TV… he’s the one that got me into this show) and there is a funny episode where Jess starts dating a fella named Russell (played by the always-manly-man-handsome Dermot Mulroney) and when Nick and Jess go to a party at Russell’s home, Nick falls into a full blown man-crush over Russell’s wonderfully masculine, leather furniture and book filled office… So Nick says… “He smells like strong coffee and going to see a man about a horse.”

This got me thinking about all my grooms I have had in the past and the ones that will come in the future, and how a man’s wedding day (probably much like the day his children are born) is life changing and defining is his personal sense of “man” and what it is to be a man in the world and all the adjective’s that go only with both of those ideas.  This quote so captured that of idea of “man” for me (and if you and I are FB friends or have stalked {it’s okay if you have} my FB pics you will see that my man, and my man-child both look like they smell of strong coffee and going to see a man about a horse ) and so it got me thinking it would be fun to do a Groom post. A MAN”S post. So much of wedding blogging, wedding imagery, wedding planning and focus is on the bride. Grooms so often have little voice in the process (and to resign themselves to having ‘no opinion” and that is so often UNTRUE) … they are told what to wear and when to show up, what the colors will be, that they don’t care about flowers, and so on.

At first I thought I would do a great post about totally awesome groomsmen gifts, but how original is that when you can just plug into the Pinterest search bar “groomsmen gift ideas” and have a plethora to choose from. Although if you want my professional option follow these simple steps:

  1. You can NEVER go wrong with a Leatherman. Seriously, it should be a bridesmaids gift too (or a wedding planner gift…hint hint, nudge nudge, although I have my own, but I am sure there are other planners in the world who would great appreciate the thoughtfulness) it’s so darn practical and awesome and useful
  2. Stop buying flasks and beer steins.  You friends will never use them again.  There are two flasks just sitting on our china shelf that my fella has been gifted – they don’t get used
  3. Cuff links and tie clips/posts are wonderful gifts. Customize them to your guys. You know their interests, nobody ever said they have to match. So roll with individualism, your friends will appreciate it.
  4. Etsy has AMAZING things. Type groomsmen gifts into the search engine an all sorts of really cool, handcrafted, one of a kind items that you can create the neatest of gifts with will appear on your computer screen. Think railroad tie bottle opener and hand crafted wooden beer 6 pack…
  5. Shaving kits and a shave. If your best buddies are beardy – mustached men, a fancy dop kit with fancy men’s grooming stuff plus a trip the local cool-guy barber shop is about as fantastic as you can get.

But I digress…

Back to weddings are for guys too. With so much focus on how beautiful the bride is and all that is glorious and wonderful about her on her wedding day (which it totally is) the pictures are all around, heck even on my own website. So I thought it would be great to share some of my favorite wedding photographs of my grooms and their menfolk over the years.  Each one them so handsome, so masculine in all the things that make up being a husband : laughter, tears, looking down at his wedding ring, looking adoringly at a woman he is totally in love with, his dance with his momma,

the strength of best friends and brotherhood, the coolness of a man (who is all nerves inside) that about to get married. To me… each one of these guys smells like strong coffee and going to see a man about a horse…

One more note about the wedding planning voice of groom’s. Gentlemen! Be heard, it’s your day too. This crazy misnomer that you are only along for the ride is so silly. You certainly are more interested in the wedding day than just the music and maybe food and cake.  You know how I know? Because when asked – you always care, you always have thoughtful questions, you often impart wonderful insight in to the decision making process. And here is a secret for you, the more invested you become in the process, the more interested and fun the wedding planning becomes. I know shopping for a tux is no fun – but go have a beer when you are done… see, it wasn’t that bad was it? Do you have interests and hobbies you are passionate about – tell your fiance, tell me or whomever is helping you plan, because I bet there is a way to incorporate your love for hunting or fishing, your German beer stein collection and love of fine micro-brews, the olive green color that you love so much, your Green Bay Packer, Brewer or Badger love (Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake Groom’s Cake anyone???) or even a falcon.  I promise we will figure it out.

Happy Planning my Man… I can’t wait to meet you.

Hi!

Welcome to the LHE blog and my place to tell my couples' love stories and share random thoughts. A bit about me...I love weddings. I love my clients. I love comfy shoes and jeans. I am obsessed with EOS lipbalm. I talk too much about my kid. I drink way too much coffee. Often my clients and I become great friends, and mostly...I am so excited that you stopped by.

My absolute joy in being a wedding planner comes from celebrating with you during your most important moments.

So let's have some coffee & chat!
